St. George's Weekend 2005: 23rd & 24th April 2005

Keighley Town Council are working towards the St. George’s weekend – 23rd and 24th April.

We are combining the celebrations with the 700th anniversary of the Market Charter and therefore all the Street theatre will have a medieval touch!

Entertainment is hoped to include: jugglers, fire-eaters, jester, medieval music by wandering minstrels and hopfully a display by the Royal Armouries.

Also there will be a four day market in the Low Street area and a funfair on Church Green car park. All traders will be expected to dress accordingly.

A National Town Criers competition will be held and it is likely that at least twelve Town Criers will be attending the weekend activities.

Watch the press for more details.

KEIGHLEY CIVIC SERVICE: 2nd May 2004

For the first time the Town Mayor will be holding a Civic Service at the Shared Church:
Sunday 2nd May (time to be confirmed).

It is hoped that all the organisations in the town will be represented. It is a service to thank the workers from the voluntary sector and the voluntary civic leaders for the time and effort they put in for the benefit of Keighley.

ST. GEORGE'S WEEKEND: 23,24 & 25 April 2004

This is organised by the Gala Committee but sponsored by the Town Council.

The Town Crier has organised a Town Crier's competition involving 9 Town Criers who will be visiting Keighley from Friday to Sunday.

There will be a Dragon seen in the town centre and other street theatre. In addition we will be having a French Market. As will be seen from the newspaper we have had great problems holding this event because of Bradford's insistence on the organisers paying £2,000 for the privilege of holding a market in Keighley. The committee has decided that the French Market be staged at Cavendish Court and it is hoped that the French Market organisers will be happy with this. It should, however, encourage trade to the Cavendish Street side of town.

On the Sunday the Scouts and Guides have their St. George's Day Parade at the Shared Church.

KEIGHLEY DAY REPORT:
Saturday 20th March 2004

The second year this has been held celebrating the inception of the Town Council in 2002.

A large number of attractions featured in the Town Centre:

    Stilt walker,
    Face Painting,

    Keighley Musicians Centre.

20 stalls donned Low Street but unfortunately adverse weather conditions forced them to shut down early and there were a number of minor injuries caused by falling stalls! Thankfully no one was badly injured but we had the professional team of St. John's Ambulance on hand who dealt admirably with the injured.

Lund Park was also the scene of a large event, run in conjunction with the Community group there but it had to be abandoned.

On the Sunday many local attractions were open to celebrate Keighley Day. Despite all, it was a good event.

VERY LIKELY POSSIBILITIES:

Keighley in Bloom:

The Recreation & Leisure Committee of Keighley Town Council actively supported the Keighley in Bloom Competition in July 2003 and hopefully will do for many years to come as part of the wider Britain in Bloom competition which takes place each summer.

The Competition was set to make Keighley brighter and better and to encourage people to take pride in where they live and work, and to help keep it clean and tidy.

Two Projects were set for the Children of Primary Schools in Keighley; one was for the children to design a poster for Keighley In Bloom with a smallish prize for the winning child and a prize worth around £200 to be chosen for their School.

For the second Project each child of participating schools were provided with a free packet of seeds to be planted in an area where flowers do not usually grow (an unkempt garden, waste land, or a pot in the back yard!) so that they can turn drab areas of the Town into a kaleidoscopic celebration of summer in time for the competition in 2004.

This plan is just part of the Town Council's drive to promote the Keighley in Bloom Competition. Also, as part of Keighley in Bloom, the Chair of the Recreation & Leisure Committee, Cllr. Bob Horrell, launched a "Pub In Bloom" competition to find the most impressive floral display adorning a Keighley Pub with a cash Prize of £200 awarded for the best display. Entry to the competition was of no cost.

A third competition for all Garden Enthusiasts living within the Keighley Town Council area was set to judge the "Best kept front Garden", "The Best Small Garden" and " The Best kept Container Garden" for which once again entry to all Categories was free. The prize for the competition was a plaque engraved with the winner's name.

Keighley Day:

Following the success of last year's Keighley Day we are forging ahead to arrange a similar event for 2004. This will take place for the week-end of 20th and 21st March 2004 in the Town Centre.

Again there will be a wide variety of stalls and lots of entertainment which is yet to be arranged. The overall theme of the event is to celebrate who and what makes up the essence of Keighley.

The Celebrations are an opportunity for all the varied cultures within Keighley to show everyone else their history, traditions, what they are proud of and their hopes for the future.

Keighley Town Council want the festivities to belong to the people of Keighley and while we are organising some events we are also allowing individuals, community groups, businesses etc. to hold their own events, under the umbrella of Keighley Day which we can help publicise and co-ordinate.

This day is chiefly to celebrate the formation of the Keighley Town Council in 2002.

Christmas Carnival:

Also last year, for the first time Keighley Town Council sponsored, along with representatives from other organisations in the town, the Christmas Carnival, which was also a huge success.

The Carnival started at 10.00am with the opening of a variety of different market stalls.

There was a variety of Street Theatre, including a Fire Eater, Dizzy and Dotty the comical, carolling duo, a Punch and Judy Show, contributions from local entertainment groups in the Airedale Centre and lots of Festive Music.

With Childrens' Rides, a Fair Organ and Mulled Wines all available the occasion was a great success in the run up to Christmas.

The day came to a close with a special memorial service with music from the Salvation Army and balloons released in memory of loved ones.

Keighley Town Council hope to hold the event on three consecutive Sundays this coming November/December following its success this last year.
